Why I Wrote the Book

I’m Susan, the author of A Somers Town Girl, and I’m delighted that you found your way to this website, which I created to complement the book.

My vision was to create a warm, inviting space where you can unwind and dive into the captivating stories of the people who have shaped and transformed Somers Town throughout history.

Why I Wrote the Book

After Mum passed away, we discovered handwritten notebooks and documents on her laptop that described her life growing up in Somers Town. She had captured her world at different stages and created something truly remarkable.

She had poured immense care and devotion into preserving these memories, so I felt her story deserved to be told. So, I carried on the work she had started.

I have always been interested in social history and London—the everyday lives, community spirit, humour, struggles, and resilience that have shaped its people and places. This is especially evident in areas like Somers Town, where history is woven into ordinary homes, familiar streets, and remarkable human endurance.

Enjoy your visit, and if you have any questions or memories you’d like to share, I’d be delighted to hear from you.

There is a page called Memory Lane where you can share your memories and stories. Click here <Contact Susan>, write your memory in the form provided, and send it. If you would like to send photographs, please mention this in the form, and I will provide a secure email link.
