A Legacy Preserved – Mum’s Story
Susan writes……… In every word Mum wrote, I could hear her warm voice and see her lovely smile. Having these notebooks is truly remarkable. They are now my most treasured possessions.
The Story At A Glance
Mum was born in 1926 during the Great Depression and was 13 when World War two began. When she was 14, her family were evacuated from London to Leicester, a move made even harder when her mother was hospitalised after becoming seriously ill.
Despite her youth, Mum took on the huge responsibility of caring for her three brothers, aged 5 and 7, and the baby who was 9 months old. Her mother had made her promise she would keep the family together, and mum met this challenge with courage and determination.
She packed a bag with supplies and some milk for the baby and ran away with them in the early hours. She headed towards Quorn, knowing her grandmother had been evacuated there.
It took tremendous courage and strength of character, but she fulfilled her mother’s wishes and kept the family together.
Family Heritage and Resilient Women
Mum’s mum was one of seventeen children and descended from a long line of resilient, hardworking Londoners. Mum’s grandfather was a costermonger and the Pearly King of St Pancras.
Her paternal grandmother was an active suffragette, and from these roots, Mum inherited great strength of character and determination.
A London Long Gone
The notebooks reveal a London of long ago—a city alive with markets, coal yards, local shops, and memorable neighbourhood characters. The stories bring the past vividly to life, giving the reader a glimpse into a London long gone.

My hope in sharing this book is to honour Mum’s voice and preserve her memories—not just for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but for generations to come… and as a tribute for all of those who lived through those times
